Not to go off on a tangent, but...

I realize that math and science is necessary. It is black and white thinking.

I strongly disagree with the latter part of this assertion.

I used to make my living in the arts (production design, for the most part) and now work as a programmer. I've studied both art and science at university. I mention that merely to communicate that I've come at life from both angles.

Creativity, and the ability to see shades of grey is absolutely vital for anyone involved in a technical field. A good programmer *must* be a creative individual, and must be able to approach a task in ways that go beyond rote. A scientific mind is, ideally, highly imaginative. Remember Einstein's famous statment, "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

I have long felt that the supposed divide between art and science is in fact non-existent.

We applaud scientists and mathematicians for thinking outside the box...

I thought we applauded anyone for doing so. Writer or musicians, for example, who explore new territory, or a filmmaker with fresh vision.

Why then, do people insist on living their lives /interacting with PEOPLE as if they were a science or math equation?...

I think the question you're trying to ask is "Why do some people insist on trying to quantify the human spirit, force it into a spreadsheet?"

If that is indeed what you are asking, the only answer I can offer is: I dunno. But I don't think it's accurate to suggest that it's scientists and technologists who do that. You may want to ask an economist, a manager or (shudder) someone in marketing...
