It's not about the numbers. It's about the people.
That more and more people are having problems getting or keeping coverage, or getting treatment because of special rules, ought to be a sign. The level of anger and frustration also indicates a system that has gone terribly wrong.
But if we're going to keep talking about numbers, what is the cost of untreated illness and injuries in this country, in lost productivity, in familial dysfunction, in spread of infectious disease?
If the private health care industry is really in the care business, they need to step up. If they can't step up, they should step aside. I even understand not just giving health care away, but if people try to pay, this cherrypicking garbage has got to stop. We will all be sick or injured sooner or later; pre-existing conditions ought not to prevent people from obtaining insurance. The stockholders ought not to be more important than everyone else.

The numbers will doubtless comfort the families who were denied insurance or denied service on policies they thought they had.
