Numbers

But, on my side of the argument: How many children died, actually died due to lack of access to health care over the last decade?

Damn good question. Do you have an answer? Or am I the only one expected to actually generate numbers?

Go ahead. Find the frigging number. With references. Kids who died in the U.S. because they couldn't get medical care. Just for a refreshing change, let me have something here from somebody else that hasn't been pulled out of thin air.

Real statistics. Not four or five anecdotes about Deamonte Driver, the kid with the abcessed tooth. Or Devante Johnson. I've heard them. They make headlines when this happens.

When you do find the number, ask yourself: Are they children who would never have fallen between the cracks of a massive government health care monolith? Of the children who did die, how many had problems because the bureaucracy of the government medical insurance system screwed up?

And once you have a number, we can talk other numbers. Like the 130 or so kids a year that die in bicycle accidents. If I don't advocate making bicycles illegal, am I callously ignoring those deaths?

Go look up any poll that asks if people are happy with their current health insurance. A vast majority are. A proper government should be asking how to take care of the rest, not try to destroy the private health system.
