re: Liberal myth

Just like I'm sure we don't rank worse than many third world countries on infant mortality.

There are many factors involved in this, including what's defined as a "live birth" around the world. Believe me, nobody has actually soundly connected this to a lack of nationalized medical care.

It doesn't matter what numbers I bring, you won't buy them.

Try me.

Nobody says revamping medical care in the US won't be painful, or that the result will be utopian. Just that what we have now is intractable. I have a fine job with gold-plated health insurance, but I'm one bad day or one denied claim away from complete bankruptcy. And I'm as true-blue middle class as they come.

That what we have now is "intractable" is largely a myth. Surveys show a vast majority of people are happy with what they have right now, despite a political and media hysteria onslaught designed to sell a socialist system to the U.S.

Unless you're a millionaire, and sometimes even then, everyone is one bad day away from bankruptcy in one way or another. Liberal fantasies aside, the government cannot outlaw misfortune. I looked at a Children's Defense Fund booklet on how people had trouble getting health care in Texas. An unnerving number of examples dealt with problems getting through the bureaucracy of government health care.

In every case where a state has tried to implement single payer, it's been voted down firmly. At some point, you see, the proponents have to finally cough up the real costs.

We should deal with the real problems of those who are poor, unemployed, or in some way unable to get health insurance. Target the assistance to those who need it. That this concept is anathema to the proponents of nationalized health care shows their real motives.
