No it is purely a strategic point I wanted to make. There are differences between now and American colonial times that it sounded as if you did not wish to consider.
I think you might understand the point if we switch good guys and bad guys in your scenario? What if western civilization is the predominant "establishment" on earth and it is the "hellacious muslims" who are like-minded and wish to get away. Do you, as the king of western civilization, let them go to set up their own colony in one of Jupiter's trojan locations?
And honestly, when you being you spoke about starting a settlement in space consisting of like-minded people, I immediately thought of Stirling's Draka mythos.
