As a Canadian, having lived in the US for 30 years, I wonder the same thing.
Bush has been bullish, has used every scare tactic in the book and quickly puts his opponents in a box. And locks them down. He is surrounded by a handful of very dedicated and bullish men who's #1 motto is GREED by force, corruption, co-ercion.
Throw in some good sound bytes about "terrorism" and "endless war" and a right wing idealogy about the US being "first" in international politics, and you have the beginning of a another fascist type government coming down the tubes.
Frankly, I think the politicians are afraid of crossing him and his buddies.
Look what the queer Rove and the eternally freeky Richard Armitage are doing for Bush's "inner circle". I think history may be trying to repeat itself here.
