That's my story and I'm sticking to it. If Bush's crimes had been that obvious the cry for impeachment should have come when he committed them, not now when he's weak and a lame duck. Yeah, sure, I'm well aware of all the mitigating circumstances, bogus WMDs, phony Al-Quada connections, faulty or cooked up intelligence, etc. But the point is that calls for impeachment are coupled more to the realization he is now helpless than the nature of his alleged offenses when he started committing them. Besides, Bush, for all his shortcomings, is not a villain, he is convinced he is doing the best for the country and that he is doing it at great personal risk to himself. This will be obvious even to his enemies during a trial, as compared to Clinton's crimes which were insignificant, but still deliberate and calculated. Everything Bush has done has been relatively out in the open, and Congressional oversight was absent, to impeach now that it is politically possible will be correctly perceived to be spite and vengeance. That would not only be a political mistake, it would just not be fair. The last thing we need is a political climate where all differences are settled by the majority party impeaching the minority. It was the true panic we all felt when we almost impeached Nixon (who deserved it) that prevented us from impeaching Reagan (who deserved it just as much), and which eventually led to the Monicagate fiasco.
