ER, please don't fall prey to this whole question of illegality with regards to impeachment.

IMPEACHMENT IS A POLITICAL PROCESS, NOT A CRIMINAL ONE.

Why have the pols convinced us otherwise? Just because there is the phrase "crimes and misdemeanors" in the explanation of the process, there is no Constitutional requirement for the impeached individual having done anything more then picked their nose in public. Even if we were to apply the C & M requirement, a parking ticket is a misdemeanor as far as I remember.

Now, you nailed it when you said the real risk lies in having the process labeled as a witch hunt but let's also remember that when Clinton came within a hair's breath of being thrown out of office, the polls were showing only a small minority of Americans supporting it (I think I heard the other day of numbers in the 20's). Did it hurt the Republicans who pressed for the impeachment? Hardly. They went on to consolidate their power in Congress.

Now the polls show that a majority of Americans would support impeaching Cheney and Gonzales and almost half would go along with Bush. Somehow I think the effort would be looked upon favorably. A great many Americans would applaud the effort even if the end result wasn't successful.

I agree it's not going to happen. The majority the Dems hold in Congress just isn't high enough and they would find very few Republicans that would go along.
