You certainly can't reason with an adult who feels that way, either.
These people are just wrong. Period. Any attempt to reason with them turns into a debate which legitimizes their position as "the other side of the story." There is NO other side of the story. And if you do succeed in demolishing them with facts and demonstrations and evidence (like Randi has done repeatedly) they simply go somewhere else and repeat the same nonsense to anyone who missed it. They don't just believe, they have a desperate need to believe.
What drives anomalism, as well as the paranormal, UFOs, superstition, mysticism, New Age crap, spiritualism and religion is the fear of death and the realization that the Universe might not be here entirely for our benefit. These people are terrified of an indifferent universe, and their hubris prevents them from perceiving their own insignificance.
Sorry to be so blunt about it, but any other response from me would be hypocritical.
Off Topic » in reply to Pamela Gay summed up this debate issue quite well
You can't reason with a child who believes in Santa Claus.
