That was repeated over and over and over by people the US pays to
1: Know, have more information than other people, and
2: Have the general good of the country foremost in their minds.
And we know now that
1: The repetition was persuasive in a loyal population, and
2: These people could care less about the country in general.
Seems to be a perfect example of The Big Lie at work, doesn't it? How to enhance it - make it specific:
1: We know where they are.
2: Commanders are authorized to use them.
Make it dramatic:
1: Make sure the smoking gun is not a mushroom cloud.
2: They could launch them off ships off the American coast.
Have many respected people say them.
1: Bush
2: Cheney
3: Rice
4: Powell
You have it. The Big Lie at work through repetition.
And even now that we all know they were lies and the people telling them either knew or should have known, there are some people who give them credibility.
