As far as I know, only some Eastern religions and Judaism have a realistic answer. You are never going to know.
The concept in Judaism is "creative anxiety". It is Man's and mens job to learn to live with the knowledge that we are never going to know. And it is arrogance for Man and men to attempt to know the nature of "God".
In my opinion, less secure individuals wrap themselves around any number of other mechanisms to try to give some superficial comfort, an answer to "why" when there is no answer to "why". These require "faith", as these solutions cannot stand up to examination. They make as much sense as worshipping a Sun God, Moon God, stature or other icon.
I won't list them, as I don't want to offend any of the very many nice people around here who believe, and they're obvious.
Again in my opinion, the problem is that "the answer" isn't available to beings who use words.
