re: Snakes all the way down.

"So let's suppose there is a god. Then what?

The world still looks the same, and history ain't changed. You've answered no questions and just brought up new ones, that don't have any answers either. You are right back where you started and have accomplished nothing."

I am not a believer in God, but you are asking what use is God as far as answers in regards to questions of science. The correct answer is use the disciplines of science to answer those questions.

Religion in the past may have been involved with trying to answer these types of questions- questions of how the world works. But the main "business of religion" has been and is today to do with how does a person live and interacts with people. Or in a word, the great religions of the world are mostly concerned with morality.
And morality has largely to do with direction- where are you going- rather than the type car you driving or the scenery.

"Where did the world come from, shaman?
A great snake laid an egg and that was the world.
And where did the great snake come from, shaman?
A great snake laid an egg...

If materialism is useless then the supernatural is pointless.
It's too simple to be useful and too easy to be true.
Specifically, God, is mostly about faith and hope. Those are powerful and important "things". "

First of all, shaman generally play an important role in primitive culture. And if some idiot asks him/her where the world comes from he/she might be not only answering that question but is adding other important things in his/her message. Second, the shaman is mostly passing along the culture of the tribe. If a shaman were to instead say: "I don't know". Then it's pretty much a certainty that instead the tribe holding something in common, they would waste much time and conflict trying come up with *some* answer.

And is that shaman really wrong to say the Universe did start from a egg? If he/she even knew about the Theory of the Big Bang, how could he/she even begin to explain it? :)

Now, in regard supernatural being pointless. Fundamentally what the supernatural says is there are many things unknown [and perhaps unknowable]. This is true.
Certainly true and easily knowable a 1000 years later. And pretty easy to see even from the past of a 100 years ago.

But if supernatural beliefs cause people to think you need to murder children to appease some god. This isn't good, nor true.

Trying to control human population by various means has been bad idea that *politicians* have been using for a very long time.
