The idea that the creation or functioning of the cosmos is under the control of some great Intelligence has philosophical problems, but then again, so do all the other explanations, including our "scientific" ones. It cannot be ruled out, and for all we know, it might even be true.
What steams me is the idea that this Intelligence cares who we sleep with or what kind of food we eat on Fridays. It is human arrogance and self-importance to see ourselves as God's major project in the universe, and that we can negotiate or lobby this divine principle by ritual and sycophantic devotion.
The hidden assumption in all religions, and in all forms of superstition and supernatural belief, is that we can tap into the cosmic plan by simply believing in something hard enough. Religion, the supernatural, the paranormal, psychic phenomena, UFOs, Atlantis, astrology, Tarot,
Feng Shue, reincarnation, the whole constellation of mystic realities we posit are all just ways we employ to help us live longer, make more money, be healthy and be popular. People talk about morality and philosophy and God's Plan, but what they really are concerned about is cheating their fate.
Faith, at its core, is irresponsibly selfish and self-indulgent, and is based on an exaggerated and conceited opinion of ourselves.
