Boy, I'm glad I'm not you

>"Faith is irresponsibly selfish and self-indulgent, and is based on an exaggerated and conceited opinion of ourselves"

Wrong!

I would think that any agnostic or atheist fits that description instead, because they ARE selfish and self-indulgent somewhat......very ego-centric. When their own hubris abandons them at opportunistic times, they fall into pits of self despair, for they no nothing of themselves, or their universe.
(Hey, this is Flame.)

>"The hidden assumption in all religions, and in all forms of superstition and supernatural belief, is that we can tap into the cosmic plan by simply believing in something hard enough".

I can see what you are seeing, but that is not what motivates most of the believers, be it in religion OR science.....or even the paranormal. Scientists fall into this category too.

>"the whole constellation of mystic realities we posit are all just ways we employ to help us live longer, make more money, be healthy and be popular".

That's your observation, and I would agree that there is some truth to it, but not in all circumstances. People just aren't all as vapid as would have us believe. Sorry, but YOUR arrogance is showing through. I study "the whole constellation of mystic realities", but NOT for any of the reasons you listed. And I'm rather insulted you see people like me that way.
Arrogance indeed.
