Both Spiro Agnew and George McGovern were decorated war heroes. Oliver Stone served in the infantry in Vietnam, as did Al Gore.
Everyone is familiar with the sacrifices of Dan Inouye (Congressional Medal of Honor) and Bob Dole.
Stirling Hayden used his sailing experience to smuggle boatloads of weapons past Nazi blockades to Yugoslav partisans, and English actor Leslie Howard (Gone With the Wind) was killed during an espionage mission. I enjoyed reading again about Eddie Albert's heroic WWII service. Ironically, he was often cast as a coward in war movies.
There does seem to be a dearth of celebrities and politicians of either political persuasion who served in our most recent wars. For example, as far as I know, only one player in the NFL, the Steeler's Rocky Bleieir,
ever served in Vietnam.
