Myself among them.
Some of the GenX'ers, and most of the Millenials, are reacting to how they've seen their parents and/or grandparents treated in the workplace. But they're not alone: some of us Boomers saw our parents (OK, almost exclusively our fathers... times have changed that much in our working lives) work for the same employers for their entire careers. The lucky ones advanced and retired early -- the unlucky ones were downsized, outsourced, and stripped of their pensions.
Loyalty, like Respect, is an earned relationship -- it cannot be demanded. In fact, the easiest way to kill any chance of either is to demand them.
Boomers invented the phrase "Take this job and shove it!"
