I was thinking "To Sir With Love," and "In The Heat of the Night."
Although I'm sure such a skilled actor played unsympathetic parts too, the characters I remember were always persons of deep honor, and often ones that were portrayed as educated and articulate among white people who weren't.
Then we got John Shaft and all his kith and kin.
So it goes.
