re: You intrinsically *know* Socrates....

The only thing I really know about alien life is that I want to see
proof of it in my lifetime. If I had any evidence I would be screaming
it from the rooftops. But sadly, while I have seen several UFOs
in my lifetime, they all turned out to be conventional craft made
by humans on this planet. And one of them was the classic
weather balloon.

Seeing as it is not impossible that some ETI have the ability to
journey to Earth in one form or another, that would of course be
wonderful to prove. But there is so much chaff among any potential
wheat in the whole UFO business that the situation is more than
a little frustrating. This is why I put my money on SETI and other
scientific methods of alien life searching.

Finding alien life would be probably the pivotal moment in human
history. Just knowing how another species is made and functions,
be it a microbe or something more complex, would expand our
knowledge considerably.

I also have to wonder if our views on life are still too provincial,
that we are looking for beings who are way too much like ourselves,
which may not be the case at least in terms of something we can
actually find elsewhere in the galaxy with our present capabilities.

The idea of dark matter - which makes up most of the matter
in our Universe - being made of really ancient black holes (see
my post in HZ Space) hit home again for me how much we are
only beginning to learn about the Cosmos.
