And then there are those people who believe they are privy to some small pool of sacred knowledge imparted to them by scholars, spies and liaisons to off worldly planes of existence.

In other words they believe anything they're told and to be trusted with the "truth" makes them feel superior to the poor souls who live in ignorance.
