Orwell was British.

Class in England was, during his time, not only a completely different animal from the modern U.S., but even different from modern England.

Income and other mobility in our country is enormous. "Class" is almost non-existent as such, even if we're only discussing income. Of the 2007 Forbes 400, only 74 inherited their entire wealth, and over 200 are entirely self-made. So are the vast majority of people in the millionaire category.

When someone political starts talking about class, income inequality, economic "fairness," or anything else along these lines, it is always followed by the proposition that if you give him and his gang a huge amount of power, they'll "fix" it by making sure the wealth is more "fairly distributed." I have never seen an exception to this.

Needless to say, if you start telling a politico like this that most of the wealthy actually earned it, they have problems since it kneecaps their moral sanction. The premise that the so-called "upper classes" don't deserve to be there is the foundation of their policies.
