Wasn't Daddy Warbucks a good guy in the Sunday funnies? Thats how I remember him, although I never cared much for the strip, Annie or her little dog, either. I now the name is pretty severe, back from when war profiteering was actually looked down on, but maybe he changed over the years, got rehabilitated during the Cold War or something.
And wasn't Snidely (or was it Snively?) Whiplash a fairly recent character (perhaps Wonderdog, or Mighty Mouse on TV). I guess I could look it up, but it seems like a waste of Google cycles, somehow.
Actually, I was a Prince Valiant fan, myself, when Hal Foster drew him, before that new wuss took over. Great sword fights and Viking ship scenes, beautiful art, and PV's squeeze, Aleta (Queen of the Misty Isles), was really a hottie.
Another fav was Steve Canyon, shameless Cold War propaganda, but it had great aviation art. There was one long sequence where a ChiCom-hijacked B-29 was being pursued by F-100s through spectacular cumulus cloud formations that was really spectacular. I've never forgotten it.
