Virtual entertainment, like the Star Trek Holodeck, might help. Heck, already people are immersing themselves in virtual reality- like Second life. And today, many people spend most of their lives living inside. Living on a multi-generation ship might not be so different.
Years ago, I wrote this book about a multi-generation ship that is at the end of its journey. I was inspired by that Space 1999 episode Mission of the Darians.
On my multi-generation ship, there had once been sporting arenas and a 5km long park with real trees, a small lake and such. That was before the gang wars broke out. When the story takes place, the cannibalistic Scavengers have taken over the park.
