It would be a prison of sorts...
Maybe that's why they want it so big... So the travellers wouldn't feel as confined by their spaceship's walls.
An eventual Mutany would be almost certain no matter what the size unless there was a very rigid and unchangable "controlling authority". But unless said "authority" was a machine, eventually humanity would demand changes in leadership, direction, purpose, mission, etc...
