Had Gore been president, he would not have invaded Iraq and the US would not be in an impossible situation and as divided as it is today.
Because he knows (as the rest of the world) countries are sovereign and if that needs to be changed, only an international mandate can allow it.
There were no connections with 911, no nuclear warheads and the UN inspectors had not found any WMD...(this, we knew before) and yet, Bush invaded Iraq.
Then, the truth came out: no WMDs after all , hundreds of terrorist attacks (when there were none before) and thousands of dead, far more wounded and the incapacity to win the peace (because that is required too!).
If Obama wins the elections and if I were him, I'd demand that Bush withdrew the troops from Iraq and if he can't do that before january 20th 2009, he should be tried for war crimes.
That would impress the world; but I'm afraid it won't happen not only because of immunity lasting after leaving office but also because for patriotic reasons, it isn't done. After all, congress approved the invasion.
And another thing: Bush must answer this question: why did he invade Iraq?
How can patriotism justify lying to the world about the reasons for war and force the US to stay in Iraq ? Arrogance .
The US staying in Iraq uses exactly the same arguments former western colonial empires used when they resisted leaving their colonies. "We do that for your own good, to protect you".
But it also is because leaving is admitting defeat.
