Just as there are many varieties of Christians, or Americans, who will fight among themselves, all of them are closer to each other than they are to Muslims from the Middle East.

And a Sunni may fight a occupying foreign infidel for Sunni reasons, a Shi'ia for Shi'ia reasons, and a Kurd will fight anyone and everyone for their reasons. The common factor is that none of them are happy being occupied by foreigners and they are willing to die for their territory. And religion.
