Re: Math, chemistry, engineering?

I'm not defending modern education. Personally, I think it sucks. My own high school had its problems, but I learned math, science, languages and English, which is what I really needed, and which seem to have fallen out of fashion these days.

Where I probably disagree with you is why this has happened. I think the problem is complex, but the MAIN driver of our educational problems today is that we simply do not think it is important as a society. We need to get a diploma to get a good job. Whether we actually learn anything is not important. Being smart is not "cool". The society screams that at you from everywhere. "Brains" are sissies.

My report cards were scrutinized when I brought them home, and I was in big trouble if they weren't up to snuff. Many of my classmates were not treated that way, but I'd wager many more of them were then than they are today.

That's the problem with modern education, a lack of overall societal respect for intellectual achievement. It's not a liberal plot.

And it's not that we don't spend enough money either. I will concede that to you. You don't need to have computers on every desk to teach kids fractions.
