Current Events » in reply to Numbers (humanity) without feeling

An interesting thread.

I posted some observations on BLS statistics that show a large increase in lower-end unemployment following a recent minimum wage hike. The actual numbers were linked in the post.

Remember, that the "jobs lost" figure always refers to the payroll jobs number, but the unemployment rate is calculated using the household numbers. The unemployment rate for teenagers increased at over six times the rate for adults.

Without interviewing each employer, harder data to prove cause and effect would be difficult to come by (it's possible some other factor is at work), but it seems to me we are definitely looking at a "trout in the milk."

The response here was like lifting a bucket up that had four hundred cockroaches under it. Scattered rhetoric in fifty different directions. Weird darwinism from SDAI, and the usual claptrap from the others.

The actual point, that the minimum wage does seem to have an effect on employment at that end of the scale, was pretty much lost in the noise.

Feelings, humanity, and compassion are ever so much easier when you can make someone else pay for it. The Robin Hood Principle.
