There's a guy here who owns 5 McDonalds he has gone on the record to say that the enforcing the law against hiring illegals will be bad for business and that prices will go up if the law is enforced. While he claims all his workers have green cards, he knows they're fakes and that his employees are all illegals. They know he knows (he's Mexican) and so they take less pay.
These are the folks who will be replaced with teens. The 16 year old counter wiper might make 3.00 an hour. The 17 year old order taker/cashier makes 4.00 an hour and the manager makes a little over the other "minimum" wage. All are legal citizens. All can speak the language. In those 5 restaurants alone - that probably will mean the hiring of 100 teens instead of illegal aliens. That small fraction would be multiplied thousands of times over just in this state alone.
Then there are all sorts of jobs that people dont want to pay much money for: canvassing neighborhoods or parking lots with flyers, trash dumping, window cleaning, custodial work, cart collecting, etc.
The construction firms down here almost always consist of 80 percent illegals (the crew) and then the crew boss who is legal. This would permit them to hire a few teens or others with less than two years experience ( I imagine the upper limit might extend into folks around age 22 who have spent time loafing or in college) as part of the crew and slowly phase out the exploitation of illegals.
Then you have the phone answerers. No need to outsource to India, where they all too often can barely can be understood, but now they could be staffed by teens. The businesses might actually save some money in the process besides providing better customer service again.
Any one who has been in a FORTUNE 400 company in the past five years knows that they are slicing and dicing every sing layer of corporate structure. Phone answerers, service people, secretaries, security - almost everyone is subject to being laid off, downsized or outsourced.
I see it as a win-win proposition.
We have a huge problem in the US and particularly in the southwest. A HUGE problem and it is the businesses seeking cheap labor that finish the equation of those who seek illegal entry into the USA.
Trying to slap down the businesses meets with political resistance. These are the folks that contribute to politicians. So one has to make it possible to hire American again and keep the money here at home. Our wealth is being siphoned to other nations: OIL, Outsourcing of production and other jobs is draining the USA and that money simply doesn't come back.
The only downside is that it may create even more of a "youth" culture than already exists. But is that even in the same class as imported slave labor?
