Long before I was old enough to even know what politics was, I knew that world was a myth. The world of Lincoln Rockwell paintings and Dick and Jane readers simply did not exist in my universe, no one I knew lived like Timmy in "Lassie". No one I knew even had a dog. And when we moved from the city to the country it wasn't like I thought it would be from what I saw on TV. It was a lot more like the Little Rascals, except there was no Buckwheat. Everyone I knew lived like the Ricardos and the Mertzes, the Cramdens and the Nortons.
No, I'm not saying it was hell on earth, I had a good time as a kid and I was happy. I was never hungry and I had good clothes on my back and shoes on my feet. I was brought up in city projects, spent my adolescence in suburban tract housing and went to high school with redneck kids in the country. But the farms in rural Florida didn't look like the ones in Mayberry. They were tomato and strawberry and citrus factories and they were worked by migrant workers.
