But the rub, as always, is where do we draw the line between melting pot and multiculturalism. I know my grandparents learned the language when they came here as youths and made sure their children were fluent and educated in English. They also had little sympathy for immigrants who refused to make the effort to integrate, just as I don't.
But they also made it a point to keep the culture and language of the old country alive. And they were very sensitive to the exact location of the boundary between a legitimate expectation of immigrants and just an excuse to insult and insult them. So am I.
When immigrants who come here work their butts off doing work we won't do for ourselves and then are accused of lacking an "Anglo-Saxon Work Ethic" I get pretty steamed. Anglo-Saxons did not invent the work ethic. They just invented the word for it.
