My header was going to be "You've taken your first step into a larger world."
People (both parties) have been acting like they aren't voting for presidents, but voting for gods. Not a chief executive, but a Corn King, who will make the crops grow, lower the seas, deliver all our needs to us, prevent any evil from befalling us, and save us from the painful responsibilities of individual thought and self-reliance.
Since our leaders are just human beings, and often not exactly the cream of the crop, the trainwreck and disillusion is inevitable. Never fall in love with a politician--they'll always break your heart. In case any conservatives are paying attention, that goes for Palin, too.
The founders tried to come up with a system that de-powered and de-centralized government to limit the damage a few idiots could do and allow people the maximum freedom. This was largely reversed in the 20th century, and we're in the same boat that many dictatorships are in: the whims and corruption of a few people at the top can control our lives at multiple levels.
Political progress may be possible if we can get enough people to say "a plague on both their houses. Take the power itself away."
