Yes, it was the researchers and us as space fans "moving the goalposts". I know I have. And yes, I still support SETI although no longer enough to contribute funds like I did in the 70s and 80s to the Planetary Society sponsored efforts. Glad the Allen Array is coming on line even though I have no expectations. But maybe 20 years from now we'll be laughing about how OBVIOUS X should have been.

I continue to be surprised at how different the universe turns out to be from what I and many others had expected.
