That is what scientists are wondering about

The article discusses the enigma of whether life started on the surface
of Earth or deep underground and then moved upwards.

Or did it start in the deep oceans around hydrothermal vents?

Or maybe it started independently in all three places, or even more
locations like from other worlds riding in on meteorites.
