And in many respects I still do.
But I can also see a technological species - including and especially
ours - virtually disappear into virtual worlds of our own making. Look
how hooked millions of people are on the Web and Internet now with
its relatively limited interface technology. Just wait until we can really
get immersed into a virtual reality. No one will leave their rooms, let
alone bother to explore space.
Of course I am not saying this is what happened or happens to every
ETI, but I can see it happpening with humanity at least.
And just because a species is intelligent (yes, I know, define that), does
not automatically mean they are going to build starships and go roaming
the galaxy. Whales and dolphins are quite smart, but they do not have
our use any kind of technology we recognize - and whales have been
around as a species for at least 30 million years.
That is what I want to know more than just about anything else: Is
humanity an aberration or as common as dust in the Cosmos?
