The troubles in the stock market remind us the laws of the free market may always catch up with us, but breaking them can still be very profitable.
One firm I worked for successfully lobbied the Reagan administration to remove a highly classified strategic intelligence system from our list of restricted technologies so we could sell it to the PRC. A large American bank handled the financing for the Chinese. It was perfectly legal. If they'll do it with national security, they'll do it with trade.
No one is trying to deny the inevitability of the laws of free markets. It's just that for the man with a suitcase full of greenbacks, there is always a way around them. Frustrating market forces is what these guys do for a living. And the biggest market force of all is that short term gain always trumps long term profits, and some men will always go with the highest bidder.
