This guy went through the same evolution I did over the last few days. I actually fell a bit for Tom's little charts showing the huge salary and benefits paid to Detroit auto workers. It sounded very wrong though and finally here's some info to put it into perspective. Make sure to follow the diary's links to see what auto workers are actually being paid.
Why I changed my mind on the auto bailout
What it shows to me once more is the incredible need we have for single-payer universal health care. If a huge part of the costs in the auto industry is paying retirement and medical benefits for retired workers, imagine how much those industries will save when the medical portion is removed from their burden and spread across all of society.
That said, we must always be diligent against union abuses. You're very right that they've been knocked down a great deal in the past decade or so but they damned well deserved it from the Jimmy Hoffa days when armed and murderous thugs were running things.
