The one that scares me the most is the one in which we convince ourselves that we are entitled to do anything to anyone if we even think they might be planning to hurt us.
I fear for my children either way. I fear they could be injured or killed in some random attack. I fear for my little clients for the same reason.
But to abandon our law, in a nation of laws, is to abandon who we are, to win the battle and lose not only the war, but our national soul.
Ernest Hemingway said, in A Farewell to Arms, "The coward dies a thousand deaths, the brave but one." I hope to be brave enough to live my life, if scared, without feeling the need to deprive others of theirs because of my fear. I hope to have the courage it takes to remember to be an American in truth, and not just in name.
