As far as Zubrin goes, while in situ fuel manufacture may be possible or not, due to dust or other factors, tha is something we don't know yet. Golidin had this plan for MISRU, but then he became a whipping boy for the neo-fascist Wrecking Crew, with help from some hytserical ninnies. Goldin actually intended to land men on Mars by 2020 with a shuttle derived vehicle.

Zubrin underestimated both radiation shielding and life support in his mass requirements- its a common fault of space fantasists.

And neither he nor you can simply wave away back contamination with hand waving rationalizations.

And as far as launching a large nuclear reactor with Ares 5 , you can forget it. As far as using the Moon simply to test manned Mars systems, well Griffin's gone, and good riddance.

Bottom line: As far as the super heavy Zubrin wanted, its not in Musk's plans. Period.
