Ollie North
Regarded as a patriot by Conservatives. As that scandal was blowing over I had dinner with an active-duty colonel, my neighbors brother. Not having associated with those folks for a while I asked him what the attitude toward North seemed to be in the O-6 and up (colonels and above) crowd.
He said that his crowd regarded North as a traitor, treasonous, and there was no reason under military law why he shouldn't be shot. The civilian CinC, of course, protected him.
