I've been studying politics, economics, their philosophical underpinnings, and their historical results since I was in college. In some ways it was a hobby, like some people will make a study of the works of Mozart. But as I grew older, I realized that unlike Mozart, or even my interest in space travel, this particular subject impinged on every aspect of my life and those of my family.
It makes a real difference to me, personally, whether capitalists, socialists, or those with ideologies that randomly swing with every change of wind, are running the country. Particularly since as time has gone on, the government has been given more and more power to impose the views of its leaders on everyone down to the most insignificant local level. It makes a difference to me if my government sees me as someone with individual rights, or a ward of the State.
And it makes a difference to me if intelligent people can be made to see this or not (the idiot voters will always vote for the guy with the nice voice or who promises the most goodies). If I need validation, that's probably it, and this certainly isn't the only venue that matters in that context.
But if it makes you happy to think I'm a simple-minded boob whose dog got run over by a commie when I was a kid, go for it.
