I think political, ideological, religious and other motivations are just as likely if not more to be an excuse for people to do evil.
There have been literally millions of inventions in human history that have improved the human condition, saved lives, cured illness, ended suffering, etc etc that were also linked to the profit motive. Pacemakers, communications equipment, vaccines, satellites, fire fighting equipment, computers, literally MILLIONS of things created or advanced in some part because someone was motivated by profit. And yes there can be negative spinoffs and results from inventions of all kinds, but the good they have done is also undeniable. You are putting the onus on the profit motive when in fact it is just as likely or more that some other motivation is culprit in evil results from technological advances.
