New Maps of Hell

We all live in the same world. The world of the physicist, the world of particles and waves, forces and fields, causality and probability. We have no choice.

But we all exist in a perceptual analogue of that external world, the one we have created to make internal sense of the other, to model it in terms we can understand, the universe of emotion and culture, psychology, religion, science and philosophy. We cannot deal with quantum and relativistic reality directly, but we must still navigate that universe using the maps and charts and compasses we devise for ourselves.

That internal universe we construct may be subjective and personal, but it is no less real. And we all have the freedom to choose one that we believe works best for us.

You can navigate ships and predict eclipses even if you believe the earth is the center of the universe. The trick is not to figure out what the real center is, or even whether or not there is a center. The whole point is to understand that it doesn't really matter.
