Now I am become death, destroyer of worlds

One can say a lot about Oppenheimer's motivations to make the atomic bomb, but they weren't based in bottomless greed. Patriotism? Nationalism? Desire to end a war that was unimaginably destructive? The race to beat the Nazis? But here was an invention that could indeed cause so much evil, especially in our age of proliferation.

I don't put AI in that category but of course there is a risk it could end up being equally dangerous or worse! But the creators of AI believe in the good they are doing for the world. AI could cure cancer, solve the puzzles of aging, make discoveries missed from old space exploration data, create a friggen warp drive! Or it could turn against humanity and destroy us all.

But the motivation of the creators is not exclusively wealth. Maybe for the investors it is first and foremost about profit, but not the creators. Consider this: the companies and scientists, and yes even the investors, who developed successful treatments for AIDS may have become wealthy but I betting they all feel pretty good about themselves for saving so many lives too. I suspect the people developing and investing in AI are in the same ballpark.
