I can't say I believe entirely in your assessment

but neither can I come up with any evidence or narrative to counter it.

The future you predict cannot be ruled out.

The best scenario I can see is that the environmental destruction you foresee will interfere so much with the world's industrial economy that the causes of the problem, pollution and resource depletion leading to environmental degradation, will diminish and the biosphere will quickly recover, even if human prosperity and freedom does not.

But it will be a different world after its over, and the exploration and settlement of the solar system will have to be postponed, perhaps indefinitely. As for the systematic launching of probes into interstellar space, well....I think we can kiss that good-bye.

We cut down all the trees and now we cannot build boats to leave the island.
