Maybe, but we certainly can't blame it on the irresponsible industrial policies of ancient Venusians.
No, my point is that the earth system has repeatedly recovered from massive natural external assaults without the global climate machine collapsing, or succumbing to runaway scenarios.
But even though I still hold to this position, I have no illusions that Mankind's economic/industrial/political systems will survive such a change, especially if it occurs with the speed which we are observing now. If mankind falls, it will be because of resource wars, waves of refugees, environmental pollution, economic paralysis, political dysfunction--in short, we will kill ourselves because we will be unable to deal with the emergency, not because the emergency itself is overwhelming.
But practically, it makes little difference. A climate emergency can only be managed effectively by a brutal fascist or communist dictatorship. I'm not sure I want to live in that kind of world anyway.
Maybe this explains the sudden rise of authoritarian government across the planet. Perhaps the collective political mind realizes that only a ruthless dictatorship can deal with this problem, a Stalinist, Maoist or Hitlerist autocracy.
Maybe this is what Paul Atreides finally realized, and his son Leto II had to endure. The gift of prophecy is not enough to alter the course of history.
