IF I did this correctly I get 2.5 kW*Hours is the MINIMUM energy required to dissociate all the molecules in 1 kg of CO2 into carbon and O2 - in reality of course the energy required would be much MUCH higher.
In 2022 the global production of CO2 was ~36 TRILLION kg...
Lets say you had all of that in one big tank, already captured- to dissociate it would take 90 trillion kW*hours of energy. About half the global energy production per year... But that assumes the process would be 100% efficient- it would NOT be, not even close... add to that the energy to capture and transport it all, and it will dwarf global energy production.
So, how much energy does it take to capture CO2 from the atmosphere?
According to Chat GPT estimates range between 100 to 1000 kWh per metric ton of captured CO2 (seems low to me), to capture the 36 billion tons released in 2022 would take 3.6-36 trillion kw*hours. IF all the above is correct, then, again, we are talking about a MASSIVE effort.

- So tell me, what do you guys think?
- We are far past the tipping point...
- What about carbon capture?
- 400+ ppm?
- I am all for it- but the scale of the problem makes it questionable
- I can't say I believe entirely in your assessment
- What about carbon capture?
- Something else to worry about.
- I think we'll need to wait and see. n/t
