as long as the information industry, the entertainment business, and corporate marketing see the citizenry as mere production units, consumption nodes or advertising targets, it is inevitable that the general literacy level of the population will be neglected and decline. a literate and educated public is not good for business, and cannot be swayed by fear, jingoism, and appeals to short term self-interest. as for the decline in the quality of the workforce, well, we can just outsource the jobs, import the workers, or surrender all productive economic activity overseas, can't we?
besides, isn't it now de rigeur in the new conservative populism to characterize the educated and the literate as "liberal elitists"? or in the immortal words of one conservative demagogue, "pointy-headed intellectuals who can't park their bicycles straight when they get to the campus".
