^The widespread rhetoric is more than a little schizophrenic, with conservatives alternately bitterly denouncing the mainstream, and then claiming to be the mainstream. You want to have it both ways, but the rhetorical trap you're trying to set is a little too obvious.^
This might be a confusion on what "mainstream" means. Don't confuse influence with numbers. That a particular set of political beliefs pervades crucial parts of our culture does not automatically make them a majority.
The recent election results are one data point. The failing newspapers and miserable TV news ratings are another. How much of the liberal "mainstream" consists of liberals talking mostly to each other?
Why do liberals and leftists have to pretend to be moderate or conservative in order to win elections? To put it in perspective, Obama won election by about 6 percentage points. In 1980, Reagan won by 10 points. In 1984 he was re-elected with a margin of 18 points, which I think is a record in recent history.
