No kidding! Even I picked that up. Unless I'm much mistaken, there's no way a man (even in a suit) could withstand the stress/heat of a freefall from above the atmosphere through the outer atmosphere down onto a platform.
But it was exciting nonetheless. It's fun to suspend disbelief and if it's exciting enough, it doesn't matter unless it's in-your-face wrong, like having a man WITHOUT a spacesuit in space survive. We can just believe that they have a lighweight material that is totally protective against heat, etc. and pressurized in such a way that the person is totatlly protected. Well, except for dummies who get so excited they don't open their chute until too late.
Star Trek is living up to its history in that the extraneous character beaming/falling/whatever down to save the day buys the big farm in the sky while the main characters always survive.
Red matter? Hee. Might as well call it the blood of the universe in which all things immolate.
