When BadDude Romulan comes back in time and kills Kirk's Pop, it creates an alternate time line where both the young and the old Spock coexist.

Now that you mention it, I do remember the phaser. Kirk and Sulu wouldn't have had such a great "bonding" experience if Kirk hadn't dropped that phaser!

What was the continuity flub?
